Our vision for HEFF

We are grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response to the entertainment, workshops and community sessions provided at HEFF2024. We have had lots of positive feedback but we do need to address some issues.

The HEFF festival organisers are committed to creating a safe and welcoming space for everyone, regardless of age, disability, gender identity, marital status, pregnancy, race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation. We aim to ensure all attendees, volunteers, and staff feel respected and protected. This includes taking action against any behaviour that compromises these values.

We believe in providing appropriate sexual health and relationships education as a small optional part of our diverse programme. We are pleased to announce that the Staffordshire Sexual Health Charity (SSHC) will be returning for HEFF2025. We acknowledge that some mistakes were made this year, and we are committed to making improvements for next year’s festival.

We will ensure the charity’s stall is more discreet, without items that might appeal to young children. As always, participation in the workshops will be entirely voluntary and held in private spaces. Parents will be able to access information about the workshop topics in advance and discuss the sessions with the charity workers to help them make an informed decision about whether they wish their children to attend. We are dedicated to improving our communication with parents to ensure clarity and consent.

Many members of our community expressed their appreciation for these important sessions, highlighting the value of open conversations about consent, boundaries, and personal safety.

Regarding our facilities and in line with the 2010 Equalities Act, we have decided to continue allowing individuals to use the toilets that align with their gender identity. We will handle any issues on a case by case basis to maintain a respectful environment. Unisex disabled facilities will also be available for those who prefer or require them, while ensuring priority access for disabled users.

HEFF is promoted by Home Education Festivals, a private company limited by guarantee and with not-for-profit principles in its articles of association. HEFF is not a cooperative. As directors we strive to reflect the community’s needs and values, though we recognise that it is not always possible to satisfy everyone’s preferences as we continue to grow.
